3 Quick steps to clean your kitchen sink

“We disinfect toilet seats all the time, but we don’t realize that we need to pay attention in the kitchen too,” says Dr Charles Gerba, a microbiologist and professor at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

Wondering why toilet cleaning is compared with your regular kitchen cleaning? The microbiologists feel that they are both equal. These are the top germ residing areas in homes.

“There are more E. coli (a type of bacteria) in the kitchen sink than in a toilet even after you flush it. The sink is a good place for E. coli to live and grow since it’s wet and moist. This bacteria feeds on the food that people put down the drain and what’s left on dishes in the sink,” continued Dr Gerba.

Check these quick 3 steps to clean your kitchen sink!

1.Empty the sink without any soiled plates or dishes

An empty sink is an ideal sink ready to be cleaned. Empty the entire sink by removing all the soiled plates and dishes, including scrubs and sponges. Then give a quick splash of water to drain the leftover food, grime and dirt particles.

Get your sink ready for an instant rinsing process.

2.Rinse the sink with a mixture of washing soda, vinegar and lemon juice to disinfect the entire surface

For your regular sink cleaning, a strong yet always available natural disinfectant is necessary. Use the blend of washing soda and vinegar with added lemon. You can rinse the entire sink surface with this blend and let it sit for 5 minutes. Take the squeezed lemon peel to scrub the surface before washing it off with fresh running water.

3.Clean the faucets, scrubs and handles with toxic-free dishwashing soap to ensure the complete cleansing ordeal

Not just the sink surface, but the faucets and handles require your attention as well. Clean them with dishwashing soap to ensure the complete cleansing ordeal. Clean the scrubs, towels and sponges used in the end by rinsing them in a bowl of dishwasher soap liquid. Clean them thoroughly with running water to remove the traces of soap and get an entirely clean sink with faucets.

Note: For porcelain sinks, you can use hydrogen peroxide to ensure the clear and sparkling sink in your kitchen.

Do not risk your health and your family’s well being for simple tasks. After all, the food you cook will be served in the dishes cleaned in your sink. Ensure you clean the sink regularly. Remember a clean sink is a safe plate for a cook!
